If you want to get into shape but cannot face the prospect of joining a gym then you may be considering buying some fitness equipment for your home. Buy how do you know what to buy? With so many pieces of home gym equipment for sale, all promising outstanding results, it can be confusing. But if you are looking to buy just one piece of fitness equipment that is capable of giving you a whole body workout then you really should consider buying a Cross Trainer.

There are plenty of cross trainers for sale through a variety of retail outlets so you will be able to find something to suit your needs. However, you need to fully understand exactly how a cross trainer can get you in to shape and what you should be looking for before you make your purchase.

In a nutshell, cross trainers offer a great way of training and conditioning your body through low impact exercise. Your legs, arms, bottom and stomach are all exercised at the same time as your body stretches and flexes. In appearance they can be similar to en exercise bike, just without the seat! There are two platforms on which the user stands and two handlebars which you need to hold during your workout. As you apply pressure with your feet (in a climbing motion) you pull forward on one arm and push out with the other. On elliptical models (considered to be of superior quality) the motion is controlled by a spin wheel. As you repeat this movement you get into a routine which is exercising your entire body and increasing your general aerobic fitness.

Basic cross trainers will have just one speed setting. If your budget will allow it you should avoid buying a model like this as it provides little resistance. Varying the resistance throughout your exercise increases the intensity of the routing and will ultimately deliver better physical results. Therefore look out for the tension control offered by the cross trainer. You should also be aware that many of the cheaper models, which use a belt rather than a spin wheel, can be very noisy. Elliptical models using a spin wheel are silent during use.

Mid to high level cross trainers will usually be supplied with a computer, which will chart your progress throughout the routine, detailing time used, time left and calories burned. In some models you may be able to plan specific workouts through the computer. In addition to the computer you may be interested in buying a cross trainer with a built in heart rate monitor. Quality models will have this monitor built in to the handle bars which can read and show your pulse and heart rate throughout the routine.

Resistance and change is the key to any workout regime, so look for a cross trainer which can deliver varying routines. If you buy a basic model it is likely that your routine will be limited to a simple, stepping type motion in a backwards / forwards direction. However, many mid-high priced models will allow you to vary this so you can not only move in a forwards motion, but also to the side (like skiing), point to point or even a downhill type motion. If you regularly vary your routine using all these motions you will see great results.

Added extras can be tempting, with some being more useful than others. Some great additions supplied with several models include a water bottle and holder (keeping hydrated throughout your workout is essential), soft grip handle bars, wheels for easy manoeuvrability and a warranty.

Whichever cross trainer you choose to buy make sure you out it to regular use. This is a significant investment and if used correctly can deliver results that visibly improve your figure and contribute to a healthier you.
